If you’ve ever wondered what happened to the old NYC, look no further than this report from the Center for an Urban Future. Since starting this survey 7 years ago the CFAUF has been keeping track of retail chains growth (And decline) in NYC. In 2014 the survey saw a big expansion of chain stores:
“The expansion of chain stores across the city picked up considerably over the past year. Overall, there was a 2.5 percent increase in the number of national retail locations between 2013 and 2014, a much more significant increase than the 0.5 percent gain between 2012 and 2013..”
We New Yorkers sure like coffee and doing taxes, according to the (PDF) of retail chains in NYC.[wpdatatable id=7] The report which tracked more than 300 retail chains contains some interesting data but just judging from the top ten which represents 2875 locations out of 7,473. The top 10 retail chains have 38% of all locations in NYC. Let’s put it this way, you could put a Dunkin Donuts, Subway and Duane Reade on every block in Manhattan.
Also some notable data, the rise of salad bars such as Chop’t and Just Salad while Cosi and Pax have declined in number of locations.

And when was the last time you ate or saw a Good Burger? How about Qdoba Mexican Grill? Most of these don’t even have locations in NYC anymore. Good Burger is completely gone and the website has become a burger lovers blog. They went from 5 locations to zero in a year. Same goes for Juicy Couture, 5 locations to none. Qdoba Grill went from 9 locations to 3 with 2 in Queens and 1 in Staten Island.
One thing which is inexplicable is the steady and even increasing locations of pizza chains such as Pizza Hut, Dominos, and Papa John’s. Though no Little Caesars, yet..
If your an Apple fan then there’s a silver lining, rumor has it that Apple will be opening 3 new stores, the Upper East Side will get a location and finally Brooklyn (Williamsburg), also Queens where it’s said that the new location will be located at the Queens Center Mall which according to sources will be the biggest Apple store yet a NY mall.
Top ten list is based on locations.
